During the fourth panel, From Hell by Larian Studios, the sixth and largest patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 – “Forging the Arcane” – was unveiled, introducing a new playable class, the Sorcerer, as well as a mysterious, explorable new region called Grymforge.
Grymforge continues the journey past the point where Early Access ended and takes the story a little further with new enemies to fight, as well as new quests and characters. Although Grymforge offers many new challenges, Baldur’s Gate 3 receives constant new gameplay, graphics and content updates throughout the entire Early Access phase.
In addition to new content, this update also offers a huge graphic upgrade, deadly weapon actions and hours of fresh content to explore. Forging the Arcane can played right now, provided the offices of Larian Studios are not (again) flooded.
The new class: The Sorcerer
Sorcerers are the newest playable class in Baldur’s Gate 3 and these powerful magicians are a force not to be underestimated. This class harnesses the powers within them and adds new spells to the game in addition to their signature ability, metamagic. Metamagic allows us to customize our own spells in the heat of the moment. It can be used to increase the range and duration of a spell, or to hit two enemies at the same time, among other powerful variations of the spell. Metamagic can be used alongside other caster to create devastating effects and is also available in online multiplayer co-op play.
Sorcerers have two subclasses, each with their own strengths and skills
Wild Magic – Wild Magic sorcerers embrace chaos and chance, using their Tides of Chaos ability to manipulate the forces of fate. This allows them to gain an advantage in attack throws, skill tests or saving throws and thus strengthen their forces in combat. In turn, a Wild Magic sorcerer can fall victim to a possible random effect. For example, he can set everyone around him on fire, receive teleportation as a bonus action, or summon an enemy Mephit.
Draconic Bloodline – Draconic Bloodline sorcerers possess magical abilities inherited from their dragon ancestors. Their faces are covered with colored scales and they have the powers of the dragon from which they are descended. A Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer whose blood has mixed with a red dragon gains additional benefits for fire spells, while dragon ancestors of other color types can offer abilities related to acid, lightning, cold, and poison. In addition, this subclass gains an additional hit point every time you level up, making them powerful opponents.
With a new magic class, new spells come
- Horrific Visage – A tadpole action that causes the opponent to bleed and allows the wizard to deprive him of a spell point.
- Enlarge / Reduce – This spell changes a character’s size and affects their physical stats.
- Chromatic Orb – A powerful single-target spell that allows wizards to hurl an orb of energy at their enemies.
- Cloud of Daggers – This spell protects the caster and surrounds them with a cloud of flying daggers.
- Crown of Madness – As the name suggests, this spell drives an enemy insane and can lead them to attack their allies nearby.
Forging the Arcane isn’t just for magic users – this update also improves melee and ranged combat. When mastering a weapon, everyone now receives up to three deadly signature moves. With the new Heartstopper movement, for example, it is possible to crush an opponent’s chest and thus reduce his actions. Other actions include the non-fatal weakening strike, which can be used to target an opponent’s hands, or the concussive smash, which stuns an opponent. These changes and additions to the weapon actions are intended to provide more variety and strategic options in hand-to-hand combat, mimicking the imagination of the tabletop game and bringing the melee classes in line with the actions that would be common for regular D&D play. The full list of weapon actions can be found in the patch notes.
A new region to explore: Grymforge
Grymforge is an ancient Sharran stronghold accessible through the Underdark, where rivers of lava and fire illuminate the dark halls and chambers. With new quest lines, cut scenes, complex combat encounters and characters, Grymforge promises hours of new content to explore and discover.
Big graphical update
Baldur’s Gate 3 has received a graphical makeover that takes the graphics to the next level. In this update, Larian Studios has vastly improved the visual depth of Faerun by implementing directional and volumetric lighting, new gradation of colors, new particle effects techniques, as well as real-time clouds, atmospheric scattering, volumetric fog, and other visual enhancements that make the game look better than ever. A small glimpse of how this affects the look and feel of the game is given by the new trailer, which focuses on Grymforge and the new class, the wizard.
With patch notes nearly eleven pages long, the updates and enhancements featured are only part of what’s available in Patch 6. There is still the new orchestral music, a Turkish voice output and the Combat-Salami that can be equipped was not even mentioned. There are many visual and cinematic improvements, as well as changes that are addressed in the patch notes, but another highlight is cosmetic damage and grime based on a character’s HP. These range from sweat, dirt, bruises to blood, depending on how strenuous the adventure was.
